Angefangen hat es mit einem Synthesizer, den es so nicht gab. Heute sind es 84 Werkzeuge in fünf Linien — von der Klangerzeugung über Bild und Licht bis zur Raumakustik, alle im Browser und sofort spielbar.

It began with a synthesizer that did not exist in that form. Today there are 84 tools in five lines — from sound generation to visuals and light to room acoustics, all in the browser and ready to play.

Signal-Werk is a brand of the sole proprietorship Thomas Schüller in Tulln an der Donau, Austria. Alongside it, Schicht-Werk handles fabrication with 3D printing, laser and textile — same owner, same address. All details are in the imprint.

Zwanzig Jahre in Soundsystem- und Veranstaltungspraxis stecken darin, und das erklärt die Richtung: gebaut wird, was man auf einer Veranstaltung tatsächlich braucht — und zwar so, dass es auch dann noch geht, wenn das Netz weg ist.

Twenty years of soundsystem and live-event practice went into this, and that explains the direction: what gets built is what you actually need at an event — built so it still works when the network is gone.

Signal-Werk ist kein einzelnes Programm, sondern das Dach über mehreren Werkzeugen. Jedes davon macht eine Sache und ist für sich benutzbar. Man muss nie mehr öffnen, als man gerade braucht.

Signal-Werk is not a single program but the roof over several tools. Each does one thing and works on its own. You never open more than you need right now.

Auf einer Veranstaltung läuft nichts getrennt. Der Takt, der den Synthesizer treibt, treibt auch die Visuals und die Scheinwerfer. Genau deshalb sprechen die Werkzeuge dieselbe Sprache: MIDI-Uhr mit 24 Impulsen je Viertelnote, Start, Weiter, Stopp. Ein Werkzeug gibt den Takt vor, die anderen folgen — oder eine externe DAW gibt ihn vor und alle folgen. Im selben Browser geht es sogar ohne Kabel: Über den Verbund laufen Tempo und Start/Stop zwischen allen offenen Werkzeugen.

At an event nothing runs separately. The clock driving the synthesizer also drives the visuals and the lights. That is why the tools speak one language: MIDI clock at 24 pulses per quarter note, start, continue, stop. One tool sets the tempo and the others follow — or an external DAW sets it and everything follows. Within one browser it even works without cables: the link layer carries tempo and start/stop between all open tools.

FLUX geht einen Schritt weiter und lässt den Klang selbst das Bild steuern: Frequenzbänder werden auf einzelne Parameter einzelner Decks gelegt, mit Schwelle, Kennlinie und Stärke. Aus der Anlage heraus entsteht das Bild, ohne dass jemand am Regler steht.

FLUX goes a step further and lets the sound itself drive the image: frequency bands are mapped onto individual parameters of individual decks, with threshold, curve and amount. The visuals emerge from the PA without anyone at the faders.

Zum Stand bei VST3: Das Gerüst auf JUCE-Basis liegt vor, aber der Klang entsteht bisher in der eingebetteten Oberfläche und nicht im Audio-Strang der DAW. Für ernsthafte Studioarbeit ist das zu wenig. Der Weg dorthin führt über einen eigenen Rechenkern, der Puffer liefert, während die Oberfläche nur noch anzeigt. Bis das steht, wird kein VST3 verkauft.

Where VST3 stands: the JUCE scaffold exists, but audio is currently produced in the embedded interface rather than in the DAW's audio thread. That is not enough for serious studio work. The way forward is a dedicated processing core delivering buffers while the interface only displays. Until that exists, no VST3 will be sold.

Die Fertigungsseite gibt es bereits: Schicht-Werk druckt, schneidet und näht. Was fehlt, ist die Verbindung — Bedienpulte für MIDI, Gehäuse für Bausätze, Halterungen für den Aufbau. Das ist erklärter Plan, nicht Zufall: die Werkzeuge sind so gebaut, dass ein physisches Pult sie steuern kann, weil MIDI Learn und freie Zuordnung von Anfang an drin sind.

The fabrication side already exists: Schicht-Werk prints, cuts and sews. What is missing is the link — MIDI control surfaces, enclosures for kits, mounts for rigging. This is a stated plan, not coincidence: the tools are built so a physical desk can drive them, because MIDI learn and free assignment have been there from the start.

Werkzeuge werden erweitert, nicht ersetzt. Eine Fassung, die du hast, bleibt lauffähig; neue Fassungen kommen dazu und lesen ältere Dateien weiter. Als in FLUX auffiel, dass der Projektspeicher die Ausbaustufen ab 0.4 nicht erfasste, wurde die Projektfassung erweitert — und liest ältere Dateien trotzdem.

Tools are extended, not replaced. A version you have keeps working; new versions are added and still read older files. When it turned out that FLUX's project storage did not cover the features added from 0.4 onward, the project format was extended — and still reads older files.

Kein Abo für das, was schon läuft. Kein Zwang zur Aktualisierung. Keine Funktion, die nachträglich hinter eine Zahlschranke wandert. Was in einer gekauften Fassung drin ist, bleibt drin.

No subscription for what already works. No forced updates. No feature moving behind a paywall after the fact. What is in a version you bought stays in it.

Alles, was heute auf der Seite steht, ist Werkstatt: experimentell, täglich wachsend, offen zum Ausprobieren. Daneben entsteht die Linie Betrieb — vollständig, konservativ, regelgesteuert, reproduzierbar: für Studio, Live-Ton, Installation und Bühne. Ein Werkzeug wird Betrieb, wenn es drei echte Einsätze überstanden hat und aus gleicher Eingabe immer dasselbe macht; dann bekommt es ein Datenblatt, Prüffälle und nur noch Hauptfassungen.

Everything on the site today is workshop: experimental, growing daily, open to try. Alongside it the operation line is being built — complete, conservative, rule-driven, reproducible: for studio, live sound, installation and stage. A tool becomes operation once it has survived three real jobs and always produces the same output from the same input; then it gets a data sheet, test cases and major versions only.

Beide Linien bauen auf demselben Baukasten: Bausteine mit veröffentlichtem Eingabeschema, Regeln mit Quelle, Ausgabe mit Fingerabdruck. Der Betrachter für jede Ausgabedatei ist frei — wer ein Blatt bekommt, kann es lesen und prüfen, ohne zu kaufen. Was zuerst kommt, steht im Fahrplan.

Both lines share one construction kit: building blocks with a published input schema, rules with sources, output with a fingerprint. The viewer for every output file is free — whoever receives a sheet can read and check it without buying. What comes first is in the roadmap.
