Der nackte TonThe bare tone

Verstehen, woraus ein Klang besteht, bevor irgendein Effekt dazukommt.Understand what a sound consists of before any effect is added.
3 Std Voraussetzung: keinePrerequisite: keine Synth Lab
0 / 3
AnleitungTutorial
Vorbereitung: Oeffne Synth Lab. Preparation: Open Synth Lab. Set the volume low before playing the first note — while experimenting it is easy to land in painful territory.
  1. Schalte alles ab, was du abschalten kannst: zweiter Oszillator, Filter, Effekte. Switch off everything you can: second oscillator, filter, effects. What remains is one oscillator, one envelope, one output. That is the smallest complete sound generator. Play a note and hold it.
Cycle through the waveforms: sine, triangle, sawtooth, square. The sine has only the fundamental. All others add harmonics — the sawtooth all integer multiples, the square only the odd ones. That is exactly where the square's hollow character comes from: the even harmonics are missing.
For exercise 1, three waveforms with otherwise identical settings suffice. Do not describe „brighter“ or „warmer“ but what you hear: „has a hollow core“, „sounds like two notes at once“, „buzzes on top“.
  4. Jetzt die Huellkurve. Vier Werte: Attack, Decay, Sustain, Release. Now the envelope. Four values: attack, decay, sustain, release. Attack is the time from zero to full. Decay from full to the hold level. Sustain is not a time but a level — where the note stays while the key is held. Release is the time from key-off to zero.
A plucked instrument has no sustain: attack near zero, decay short to medium, sustain at zero, release short. The string is plucked and decays regardless of how long you hold. Try it and note the four values.
A bowed instrument is the opposite: audible attack because the bow needs time, decay irrelevant, sustain high, release medium. The bow holds the note as long as it is drawn. Note the four values here too — that is exercise 2.
For exercise 3 slowly raise the attack from zero, playing the same note repeatedly. Somewhere between roughly 5 and 20 milliseconds perception flips: below it you hear an onset, above it a swell. The exact threshold depends on pitch and waveform — find yours and write it down. That is not a number from a book, it is your measurement.
Common mistake: Setting the level too high makes the sawtooth seem „better“ because it sounds louder. At equal amplitude a sawtooth carries more energy than a sine. Compare only at matched loudness, otherwise you are comparing level, not timbre.
AufgabenExercises
Afterwards you can: You can break a sound into waveform, envelope and pitch and change each part deliberately.

Filter — was wirklich passiertFilters — what actually happens

Stop turning the filter by ear and know what it does to the spectrum.
4 Std Voraussetzung: K1Prerequisite: K1 Synth LabRack
0 / 3
AnleitungTutorial
Preparation: Synth Lab for the first two exercises, Rack for the third. Have noise ready — it contains all frequencies at once and thus reveals what a filter removes.
A filter takes away. It adds nothing. The low-pass passes low frequencies and attenuates high ones, the high-pass the reverse, the band-pass leaves only a range. The cutoff is where attenuation reaches 3 dB — not where sudden silence begins.
Wenn dein Filter die Wahl bietet, hoer dir beides an derselben Grenzfrequenz an.Slope says how fast it continues. 12 dB per octave means: one octave above cutoff the signal is 12 dB quieter. 24 dB per octave sounds markedly more decisive. If your filter offers the choice, hear both at the same cutoff.
Schreib auf, was uebrig bleibt, nicht was fehlt. For exercise 1 take noise through all three types at the same cutoff. Low-pass leaves noise like distant surf, high-pass a hiss, band-pass something that sounds as if through a pipe. Write down what remains, not what is missing.
Viele Baesse leben davon.Resonance boosts the region right at cutoff. Raise it slowly: first the transition is emphasised, then it whistles, and at some point the filter oscillates by itself, even without input. That is self-oscillation, not a fault — the filter has become an oscillator whose pitch is the cutoff. Many bass sounds live off this.
For exercise 2 note the resonance setting where it flips. On most filters it is near maximum, but not on all — some never oscillate because feedback is deliberately limited.
For exercise 3 take the envelope from K1 and route it to cutoff instead of amplitude. The note now becomes duller rather than quieter. That is exactly the difference between a sound that vanishes and one that withdraws. Describe the difference in one sentence.
Common mistake: Cutoff and resonance interact: raising resonance makes the signal louder at one point and can clip although you turned nothing up. Watch the level.

Modulation — Bewegung ohne HändeModulation — movement without hands

Let sound change over time instead of moving every control yourself.
4 Std Voraussetzung: K2Prerequisite: K2 COREReSynth RB-3000
0 / 3
AnleitungTutorial
Vorbereitung: CORE oder ReSynth. Beide haben eine Modulationsmatrix — eine Tabelle, in der links steht, was moduliert, und rechts, was moduliert wird.Preparation: CORE or ReSynth. Both have a modulation matrix — a table with the source on the left and the destination on the right.
Modulation means: one quantity changes another without anyone moving a control. The source is usually an LFO, i.e. a very slow oscillator, or an envelope. The destination is any parameter. Amount says how far it swings.
For exercise 1 route the same LFO to three destinations in turn. On pitch that gives vibrato. On cutoff a wah effect. On amplitude tremolo. Three names for the same movement in three places — that is the key insight of this module.
Watch the rate. Below about 20 Hz you hear movement as movement. Above that it fuses and becomes timbre — an LFO on pitch at 200 Hz is no longer modulation, that is FM synthesis. The boundary between the two is only rate.
For exercise 2 you need a very slow LFO. At 120 BPM eight bars last 16 seconds. An LFO taking half a cycle for that runs at about 0.03 Hz. If your tool can sync modulation to tempo, use that — it then stays correct across tempo changes.
For exercise 3 route one LFO to the rate of a second. The result is movement that itself becomes uneven — no longer a regular vibrato but one that breathes. That is exactly what separates mechanical from living modulation.
Common mistake: Too much modulation on too many destinations gives mush. When nothing stands out any more it is not subtle, it is arbitrary. Remove all but one routing and build from there.
AufgabenExercises
Afterwards you can: You can read a modulation matrix and build movement deliberately.

5 Std Voraussetzung: K3Prerequisite: K3 CORESPORENWERKCHIPWERK MK2
0 / 2
AnleitungTutorial
Preparation: CORE for subtractive and FM, SPORENWERK for granular, CHIPWERK for the chip exercise. Allow more time here — this is about comparison, not a single result.
  1. Subtraktiv heisst: viele Obertoene erzeugen, dann wegfiltern. Subtractive means: generate many harmonics, then filter them away. That is the route from K1 and K2. It is strong for anything imagined as an instrument with a body and weak for sounds whose partials are not integer multiples.
Bei ganzzahligen Verhaeltnissen klingt es harmonisch, bei krummen metallisch — und genau deshalb sind Glocken die Standarduebung fuer FM.FM means: one oscillator modulates another's frequency, so fast that no movement is audible but new partials arise. Their position depends on the frequency ratio of the two. Integer ratios sound harmonic, non-integer ones metallic — which is exactly why bells are the standard FM exercise.
Granular means: cut a sound into very short pieces and rearrange, overlap and transpose them. The method is strong for textures and pads and weak for anything needing a clear onset.
For exercise 1 take the same idea, say a bell, in all three methods. Subtractive gets laborious because a bell has inharmonic partials a filter cannot create. Via FM it works in minutes. Granular gives you a cloud of bells rather than a bell. That observation is the exercise: not which method is better, but where each is easy and where hard.
For exercise 2 in CHIPWERK: old sound chips had few voices, fixed waveforms and no filter. What they could do was change extremely fast from note to note — arpeggios so fast they are heard as a chord. Build that and explain why a sampler does not solve the same thing the same way.
Common mistake: The methods are not a ranking. Calling FM more modern than subtractive overlooks that both date from the early seventies. They solve different problems.

Die Schaltung dahinterThe circuit behind it

Verstehen, was im Gerät passiert — analog wie digital.Understand what happens inside the device — analogue and digital.
5 Std Voraussetzung: K2Prerequisite: K2 LehrwerkzeugeTeaching tools
0 / 3
AnleitungTutorial
Preparation: The seven teaching tools from the working paper Electronic Sound Generation, CC BY 4.0. They sit under Lehrmittel and run in the browser — you need the filter calculator, VCO calculator and aliasing view here.
Now it becomes a circuit. The cutoff of a simple RC stage follows from resistance and capacitance; change either and it moves. In a voltage-controlled filter a component takes the role of the variable resistor — hence VCF.
For exercise 1 take your cutoff from K2 and work backwards with the filter calculator: which component values give it? You will notice there is not one solution but a family — and that the choice depends on what else you want.
Daher kommt das Stimmungsproblem alter Analogsynthesizer.1V/oct means: one volt more gives one octave up, i.e. double the frequency. Frequency behaves exponentially with voltage. An oscillator whose frequency depends linearly on voltage therefore needs an exponential converter ahead of it. That works from a transistor's characteristic curve — which depends on temperature. Hence the tuning problem of old analogue synthesizers.
For exercise 2 look at the exponential converter and describe what happens as temperature rises: the curve shifts, the instrument detunes. That is why serious devices have temperature compensation — and why older ones must warm up first.
A digital system can only represent frequencies up to half the sample rate. Anything above is not cut off but mirrored and appears as a false, usually inharmonic tone further down. At 48 kHz the limit is 24 kHz.
Genau deshalb klingen billige digitale Oszillatoren in hohen Lagen schmutzig. For exercise 3 calculate from which fundamental a sawtooth's harmonics cross that limit. A sawtooth at 5 kHz already has its second harmonic at 15 kHz and its fourth at 25 kHz — which mirrors down to 23 kHz. That is exactly why cheap digital oscillators sound dirty in high registers.
Häufiger Fehler: Die Rechnung sagt, was moeglich ist, nicht was gut klingt. Common mistake: The calculation says what is possible, not what sounds good. A filter can be numerically correct and still unusable because component tolerances make it drift across a production run. Calculation does not replace measurement.
AufgabenExercises
Afterwards you can: You can trace the path from control to component and back.
